Vernacular written forms of ban(班)/ban(斑)in epitaphs and their sources
The characters ban(班f)and ban(斑)are commonly used in ancient documents and epitaphs.Due to their unclear sources and mistakes made by earlier scholars,these two characters are often confused in analyses.This paper clarifies the evolution of these two characters and corrects their interpretations and collations in several ancient epitaphs and dictionaries.The paper suggests that,despite the complexity of vernacular written forms,there are still regulations and rules which underlies.Wrong rendering and classification of vernacular written forms can be avoided by comprehensive analyses on the form,sound,meaning and use of characters based on scientific generalization of the evolution paths of Chinese characters.
