Pragmatic properties of Chinese"V+NPobl"structures
In Modern Chinese, verb phrases with oblique objects such as chi shitang(吃食堂,lit.eat-restaurant)and ku Changcheng(哭长城,lit.cry-Great Wall)have attracted much attention. This paper expounds on the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic restrictions of oblique arguments in object position as well as the pragmatic properties of Chinese VO structures, and proposes as follows:1)Chinese"V+NPobl"structure is not the consequence of syntactic or semantic rules, but a syntactic manifestation of pragmatic properties;2)The relation between verb and object in Chinese"V+NP"structures should be interpreted as topic-comment rather than thematic relations.
