Upon the interpretation of fangpan(芳判)in Xi guanshiyin yingyan ji(系观世音应验记),no agreement has yet been reached.Some believe that it is a variant of jili(蒺藜)with sound altemation while others suggest the corruption of leci(艻刺)or maoci(茅刺).This paper investigates from the perspectives of vemacular written forms,historical lexical studies and surrounding contexts and proves that fangpan should be the corruption of leci(艻刾)which is a vernacular written form of jici(棘刾).
