Diabetic peripheral neuropathy(DPN)is one of the common chronic complications of diabetes. In recent years, its incidence and disability rate are increasing year by year.Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the fundamental pathogenesis of DPN lies in deficiency of Qi and blood,Yin and Yang of Fu Zang, blood stasis and obstructing the meridians, while western medicine believes that the disorder of glucose and lipid metabolism, lack of neurotrophic factors(NTF),oxidative stress(OS)and autoimmune diseases can all lead to DPN.Traditional Chinese medicine applies various methods such as prescription therapy, acupuncture, and physical therapy to improve the clinical symptoms of DPN patients from multiple aspects and perspectives.Western medicine is mainly from the correction of metabolic disorders, symptomatic analgesia,anti-oxidative stress, nutritional nerve and surgical treatment. This paper summarizes the pathogenesis and treatment of DPN from the perspectives of traditional Chinese medicine and modern western medicine by reading a lot of relevant literature and combining clinical practice observation, providing new ideas for the treatment of DPN.
