Advances in Research on the Risk of New-onset Diabetes Mellitus Induced by Statins
Statins have long been the first-line drug for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, but studies have shown that long-term use will bring many adverse effects. This review focuses on the related factors and pathogenesis of new-onset diabetes mellitus induced by statins, including the effects on insulin secretion, insulin sensitivity and resistance,miRNA and β cell mitochondrial function. Although statins may lead to new-onset diabetes mellitus, patients should be encouraged to use statins to prevent cardiovascular disease in the clinic, and if there is no contraindication, they can also be combined with non-statin lipid-lowering drugs to reduce the adverse effects of statins, and doctors should measure blood sugar status after starting the drug and customize lifestyle recommendations and care based on the results. It is hoped that this review can provide guidance for the individualized diagnosis and treatment of diabetic patients.
