Lethal Cause of Acute Arsenic Poisoning Caused by Oral Realgar Preparations in the Treatment of a Child with Leukemia:A Case Report
Objective To investigate the cause of acute arsenic poisoning caused by realgar preparations. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on the diagnosis and treatment of acute arsenic poisoning caused by oral realgar preparations in a child with leukemia. The characteristics of arsenic poisoning in the child with leukemia treated with realgar preparations and the treatment precautions were summarized. Results The daily dosage of realgar in the child was 1 g,which was much higher than the daily dosage of a single ingredient of 50-100 mg.The clinical symptom was multiple organ failure, with a urine arsenic content of 33.56 µmol/L,far exceeding the normal value of human urine arsenic(1.8 µmol/L),and the child was diagnosed as acute arsenic poisoning. Conclusion The daily dosage of realgar for the child belongs to overdose medication. The dosage and course of treatment of realgar preparations should meet the requirements of the drug package insert, and should not be taken for a long time or overdose.Once arsenic poisoning symptoms such as arrhythmia and prolonged QT interval on electrocardiogram occur, the medication should be stopped immediately to ensure the medication safety of the patient.
