Objective To summarize the research status of topical preparations of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM).Methods Literature related to TCM topical preparations in databases such as CNKI,VIP,WanFang,and PubMed were searched to summarize the clinical application status,and development suggestions were put forward.Results TCM topical preparations are based on the theory of TCM,supplemented by appropriate dosage forms and administered through the skin,mucous membrane or cavity.TCM topical preparations can act on the site of the lesion locally,reduce gastrointestinal irritation,and avoid first-pass effects.The research status of TCM topical preparations can be further improved through the secondary development of current preparations,the establishment of standard specifications for toxic TCM topical preparations,the expansion of the efficacy of TCM topical preparations,and the promotion of research on classic formulas.Conclusion TCM topical preparation is an important part of TCM unique external therapy method in China,with a long history of application,and plays an irreplaceable role together with oral preparations.
