In Vitro Antioxidant Activity of Extracts from Chrysanthemum Indicum Flos in Different Solvents
Objective To investigate the in vitro antioxidant activity of extracts from Chrysanthemum Indicum Flos in different solvents, and to determine the content of total flavonoids by the aluminum nitrate colorimetric method. Methods The scavenging abilities of petroleum ether, ethyl acetate,n-butanol,residue extraction, and original extract on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazine(DPPH)free radicals and 2,2'-hydrazine-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)diamine salt(ABTS)free radicals were detected to evaluate the antioxidant activity of extracts from Chrysanthemum Indicum Flos in different solvents. With rutin as a reference substance, the content of the total flavonoids of each extract was determined by the aluminum nitrate colorimetric method. Results The half maximal inhibitory concentrations(IC50)of the extracts from Chrysanthemum Indicum Flos in the above five solvents for scavenging DPPH free radicals were(312.2±10.29)μg/mL,(3.21±0.05)μg/mL,(40.60±1.73)μg/mL,(254.85±3.65)μg/mL,and(114.57±3.75)μg/mL,respectively;the IC50 values for clearing ABTS free radicals were(112.05±2.00)μg/mL,(19.56±0.92)μg/mL,(24.03±0.77)μg/mL,(88.13±3.26)μg/mL,and(53.78±1.19)μg/mL,respectively.The contents of total flavonoids of the extracts from Chrysanthemum Indicum Flos in the above five solvents were(14.08±0.42)%,(42.43±1.63)%,(18.13±0.58)%,(5.17±0.085)%,and(16.26±0.71)%,respectively.Conclusion Extracts from Chrysanthemum Indicum Flos in different solvents have strong antioxidant activity, among which ethyl acetate extract has the strongest antioxidant activity, and the content of total flavonoids of ethyl acetate extract is also the highest.Flavonoids in Chrysanthemum Indicum Flos may be the main active ingredients with antioxidant activity. This study provides a reference for the extraction of natural antioxidants from Chrysanthemum Indicum Flos.
