Flavonoids, widely present secondary metabolites found in plants, exhibit a spectrum of pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory,anti-cancer,anti-cardiovascular disease,anti-diabetes,anti-aging and radiation protection properties. Currently, the production of flavonoids primarily relies on plant extraction and chemical synthesis, which may not be able to meet the market demand. As a result, microbial synthesis of natural products has emerged as a novel approach for achieving their large-scale production. In the paper,we review the strategies for constructing microbial cell factories in flavonoid production and compile relevant examples of flavonoid production through synthetic biology in recent years, providing a valuable reference for synthetic biology research on flavonoids.
