Surgical operation data are the key data support of performance evaluation of national public hospitals,but the classification system of surgical operation currently used in China has some problems such as lagging update and limited space.This paper systematically compared and analyzed the surgical operation coding systems and their applications in the United States,Britain,Australia and Canada.It was found that the faceted classification framework was becoming the development trend of in-ternational surgical operation coding standards because of its strong ability to express clinical terminology information and large space capacity.In addition,the surgical operation data of the four countries have been systematically collected at the national lev-el and widely used in the fields of fairness,quality and accessibility evaluation of health systems.The United States,a market-o-riented health system,focuses on quality evaluation,while the other three countries with government-led health systems focus on accessibility evaluation.Therefore,it is suggested that China learn from international experience to introduce ICHI developed by WHO based on faceted classification system,and enrich and improve the existing evaluation index system related to surgical pro-cedures,so as to better support the evaluation of high-quality development of health.
