Abstract
In order to find out the reason why Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae was used in classic prescriptions instead of Rhizoma Atractylodis, the origin of these two medicines was explored. It revealed that ZHANG Zhong-jing used the name of'zhu'instead of Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae in his original book.Rhizoma Atractylodis was widely appeared in medical books before Song dynasty. Therefore, there was a reasonable ground for Rhizoma Atractylodis to explain the classic prescriptions.Hence,it was possible and reasonable that the ‘zhu’ in classic prescriptions meant Rhizoma Atractylodis.
