Exploration on the initiation mechanism of manual acupuncture based on the mast cell-fibroblast interactions
The effectiveness of acupuncture depends on the initiation of acupuncture at the acupoint.Currently,it has been accepted that the degranulation of mast cells is the key step for transformation of mechanical signals, generated by manual acupuncture,to neurotransmitters which trigger neuron transmission. This step is also recognized as the necessary index of successful initiation of acupuncture. However,it is still unclear how manual acupuncture can cause the degranulation of mast cells.Meanwhile, the role of fibroblasts, the most abundant cells inside the acupoint, and their relationship with mast cells are not well understood. However, the explanation of these questions might be the critical parts to disclosure the mechanisms of acupuncture initiation. This article therefore discusses the following points:the transformation of mechanical signals in the acupoint;the role of mast cells in acupuncture initiation;the response of mast cells to mechanical signals;the possible role of fibroblasts in acupuncture initiation;and the possible interaction between fibroblasts and mast cells in the acupoint. This article aims to provide a future direction for the study of manual acupuncture initiation.
