Role of autophagy in depression and research progress on the miRNA/autophagy axis
Depression is a kind of mental disease characterized by persistent mood drop, anhedonia, and loss of interest.Autophagy is a cellular self-degradation process that maintains cellular homeostasis by removing and recycling misfolded or aggregated proteins, damaged organelles, and pathogens.Autophagy has a dual regulatory effect on depression, and depression can be significantly improved through drug therapy, physical therapy, and psychological therapy targeting autophagy.MicroRNA(miRNA)participates in disease regulation by targeting autophagy. This article reviews the intrinsic connection between depression and autophagy, summarizes the research progress in depression treatment targeting autophagy, and explores the mechanism of miRNA on autophagy and the mechanism of depression treatment based on the miRNA/autophagy axis.
