Exploration on the mechanism of acupuncture in the co-morbidity of inflammatory bowel disease and mood disorders
Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)is a group of chronic and recurrent intestinal inflammatory disorders.Approximately one third of patients with IBD also experience mood disorders, which have a direct impact on disease activity, course, and prognosis. This may be related to the effects of microbial composition and metabolism in the gut on the maturation and development of the immune and central nervous systems.Acupuncture has shown good efficacy for the comorbidity of IBD and mood disorders, and its underlying mechanisms of action are not fully understood. It is currently believed that acupuncture may achieve therapeutic effects by regulating the gut microbiota,hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal(HPA)axis,autonomic nervous system(ANS),and vagus nerve(VN).This article attempts to explore the potential pathways for acupuncture in treating the comorbidity of IBD and mood disorders from the aforementioned mechanisms.
