Textual research of the origin and development on the disease name of'breast lump'
The term'Rupi'(or'breast lump')first appeared in the Zhong Zang Jing and belongs to the field of pediatric diseases.The analysis of the meaning of the characters suggests that'ru'refers to the production,breast,milk,and other related concepts,while'pi'conveys the ideas of accumulation,mass,and hidden condition.The concept of'Rupi'was first defined in the Song dynasty's Taiping Shenghui Fang,which described it as a disorder in breastfeeding infants,characterized by abdominal lump formation,loss of appetite,and progressive emaciation,at this time,the word'ru'in the name of the disease means milk,which is actually the cause of the disease.In the Ming dynasty,the name of'Rupi'evolved into a new concept of disease,referring to mass diseases born in women's breast,at this time,the word'ru'in the name of the disease means breast,and it is actually the location of the disease.In view of the existence of polysemy in the name of'Rupi'in medical books of past dynasties,this paper studies the origin and evolution of the name of'Rupi',and finds that the name of'Rupi'has experienced the evolution process from pediatric'Rupi'to surgical'Rupi',that is,'Rupi'refers to pediatric diseases before the Ming dynasty,and refers to surgical and pediatric diseases at the same time in the Ming dynasty and Qing dynasty.In modern times,it has become an exclusive name for surgical breast mass diseases.
