Thoughts on the standardization of tongue pictures naming
Tongue diagnosis,as one of the typical traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)diagnostic methods is an important component of the diagnostics in TCM.Tongue illustrations or images as the main carrier of tongue diagnosis are widely used in clinical practice,education and scientific research.However,there are many issues around nomenclature in the area of tongue illustrations,this includes missing information,discrepancies between the tongue illustration and descriptive texts,misinterpretation and so forth.The above-mentioned issues affect the research and development of tongue diagnosis.There is a need for standardisation or a unified approach to nomenclature for tongue diagnosis.To do so,we conducted a literature review on ancient classic and modern literature in relation to tongue diagnosis and tongue illustration.This was done based on summarising the contemporary experience in TCM tertiary education,focused historical development in tongue diagnosis,the features of tongue illustration in terms of nomenclature in different historical periods as well as consideration of modern research findings.
