Platelet activation, adhesion and aggregation have an important role in the pathogenesis of obstructive vascular diseases.Flavonoids are polyphenolic compounds commonly found in plants and can have anti-platelet aggregation effects through differently biological pathways. In this paper,we summarize the anti-platelet aggregation effects of flavonoids and their intermediate metabolites in vivo through the analysis of platelet aggregation mechanisms and absorption and metabolism of flavonoids in vivo. The current status of clinical studies on the anti-platelet aggregation of flavonoids in plants is also demonstrated. It is concluded that further study of key mechanisms of anti-platelet aggregation of flavonoids is needed although the flavonoids can achieve anti-platelet aggregation effects by interfering with the main targets in the process of platelet activation. The in-depth investigation of the exact mechanism of anti-platelet aggregation of flavonoids and their intermediary metabolites in traditional Chinese medicine and formulas in different points will contribute to the development of new anti-platelet aggregation drugs, and also provide an important guideline for the clinical thrombotic diseases in traditional Chinese medicine.
