The concept of'Fawu'is unique to the discipline of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)and is widely recognized. However, the definition of its semantics is ambiguous and not detailed in the textbooks. In our study,we apply the theory and methodology of phenomenology to retrace and semantically analyze the concept of'Fawu'.The study concluded that'Fawu'do not specifically refer to a certain type of food or a certain kind of food, but rather, they refer to foods or medicines that aggravate a certain disease or induce a new disease based on the concept of treatment based on pattern differentiation of TCM.In other words, the semantic structure of'Fawu'should be understood as'substances that cause or trigger symptoms'.It is evident that'Fawu'is a dynamic concept rather than a nominal concept, physicians need to adhere to the principle of dialectical treatment of TCM and conduct differentiation based on the patient's situation. This conclusion helps modern Chinese medicine practitioners to more accurately and effectively use the concept of'Fawu'to guide the diagnosis and prognosis of diseases in clinical practice.
