Regulatory effects of probiotic supplements on lipid metabolism and intestinal flora structure in adolescent obese patients
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the clinical efficacy of probiotics and examine their effects upon intestinal microbiota in adolescent obese patients so as to provide a new treatment of adolescent obesity.METHODS From January 2022 to January 2023,60 adolescent obese patients were recruited from Department of Endocrinology of Shijiazhuang People's Hospital. They were randomized into two groups of observation(n=30)and control(n=30).Both groups received dietary and exercise guidance while observation group had additional oral probiotics(Bifidobacterium quadruple viable tablets,specification:0.5 g/tablet).After a 12-week probiotic intervention, the changes in body mass index(BMI),BMI percentile,waist-to-hip ratio, body fat per-centage,total cholesterol(TC),triglyceride(TG),low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C),high-density lipoprotein cho-lesterol(HDL-C)and ratio of enterococci to bacilli were observed before and after intervention in both groups.RESULTS After 12 weeks of intervention, the levels of BMI,TC,TG,LDL-C and enterococci declined in observation group as compared with control group and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).CONCLUSION The application of probiotics may regulate intestinal microbiota structure, improve BMI,waist-to-hip ratio, body fat percentage and lipid metabolism related indica-tors in adolescent obese patients. Thus it provides a new and reliable management of adolescent obesity.
