Prescription characteristics and clinical applications of Chinese patent medicine for cough with both cool-ing and warming properties based upon mathematical classification
OBJECTIVE To screen Chinese patent medicine for cough with both cooling and warming properties by math-ematical method and explore the characteristics of efficacy to provide theoretical rationales for rational drug uses and drug utiliza-tion evaluations at medical institutions.METHODS All expectorant and antitussive Chinese patent medicines were retrieved from National Medical Insurance Catalogue."Tripartite algorithm"was utilized based upon drug property theory and"nine-grid"employed by major indications of the instructions for screening Chinese patent medicines with both cooling and warming property. The drugs included in both methods were the final selected drugs and their prescriptions and applications analyzed.RESULTS The authors obtained 75 species of Chinese patent medicine for cough:28 species via"Tripartite algorithm",22 species by"nine-grid"and 12 species overlapped:Xingbei Zhike Granules,Suhuang Zhike Capsules,Kechuanshun Pill,Gejie Dingchuan Pill,Xiao'er Magan Granules and Xuanfei Zhisou Mixture. Most of them included Peucedanum root-semen armeniacae amarae,Ephedra-Gypsum and other cooling-warming drug combinations. The instructions did not distinctly specify the characteristics of"extemal cold & internal heat".Chinese patent medicines with both cooling and warming property are routinely applied for coughs mixing cold and heat distinctly or indistinctly. It should be stressed during the evaluations of indications and combination medica-tions.CONCLUSION The characteristics and clinical applications of Chinese patent medicines for cough with both cooling and warming property are summarized. It provides references for rational uses and utilization evaluations of these drugs.
