Research advances of folate metabolic enzyme gene polymorphism and the relationship between HHcy and CKD
As a major health hazard with a global prevalence rate of 13.4%,chronic kidney disease(CKD)is associated with an elevated risk of developing end-stage kidney disease(ESKD)and cardiocerebrovasculopathy.Growing studies have indicated that hyper homocysteinemia(HHcy)is a risk factor for kidney disease. It is correlated closely with the occurrence and develop-ment of CKD.And 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid is an essential cofactor of related enzymes in the metabolism of homocysteinemia(Hcy).Hcy is affected by folate metabolism enzyme gene polymorphism during the transformation into methionine.Folic acid supplementation may effectively lower the level of Hcy,blunt kidney damage caused by HHcy and delay the progression of CKD.However, the effects of folic acid and its metabolic enzymes on the occurrence and development of CKD have remained elusive. This review focused upon folate metabolism enzyme gene polymorphisms and the occurrence and development of HHcy/CKD to provide theoretical rationales for preventing and treating CKD patients with HHcy.
