Cost-saving analysis evaluating early switch from intravenous to oral therapy among hospitalized patients
OBJECTIVE To determine the conversion rate fulfilling the standard of intravenous oral dosing without conver-sion and clarify the cost-saving status of intravenous oral dosing.METHODS For this cross-sectional study, the prescriptions of inpatients from March 1,2023 to March 1,2024 was obtained by simple random cluster sampling.Price differences between intra-venous and oral drugs, number of convertible drugs and total number of intravenous drugs were adopted as statistical indicators. The proportion of target drugs fulfilling the standard of intravenous drugs without conversion and saving value of drug cost were calculated.RESULTS A total of 20043 patients were largely distributed at internal medicine wards. The average conversion rate of five target drugs from intravenous to oral dosing was 52.44%.Annual potential cost-saving of five target drugs was 6921009.62 yuan and average potential cost saving per patient 335.3 yuan/year.CONCLUSION The proportion of drugs fulfill-ing the standard of intravenous oral dosing without conversion remains high. The strategy of intravenous oral dosing may greatly save the costs of medication. Therefore oral drugs should be utilized as much as possible for patients fulfilling the standard of intra-venous oral dosing when conditions permit.
