On the Functions,Types and Internal Governance of Non-Governmental Organizations in International Chinese Language Education Abroad
Non-governmental organization(NGO)in international Chinese language education(ICLE)is an important force in the globalization of the Chinese language.This study selects 95 NGOs in ICLE from four developed countries and explores their functions,types,and internal governance features.The mission state-ments and charters of the NGOs are taken as the corpus,and the methods of content analysis and corpus-based critical discourse analysis have been used.The results show that NGOs in ICLE have three major func-tions,namely language and culture,social governance,and international affairs.According to their business scope,NGOs can be divided into language education organizations and foundation organizations.According to their functional orientation,they can be divided into mono-functional,compo-functional,and multi-functional organizations.The internal governance of the NGOs shows the features of"democracy"and"autonomy,"with a combination of flexibility and rigor.Some suggestions have been put forward for expanding the func-tions of NGOs in ICLE.
