Recontextualization of"Abolition of the Status of English as the Main Subject":A Discursive Approach to Language Policy
As a relatively new concept, stance, and academic approach, the Discursive Approach to Language Policy(DALP)pays particular attention to what kind of practice discourse engages in,and how discourse creates, interprets, and transmits certain language policies, attracting the attention of the academic commu-nity.Accordingly,by collecting posts and comments of"Abolition of the Status of English as the Main Sub-ject"on Sina Microblog,a hot-spot event related to language policy, this study adopts Legitimation as the analytical framework and investigates how the hot-spot event is recontextualized into the contexts of other so-cial events. The results show that netizens have mainly adopted moral evaluation, rationalization, and legiti-mation through a hypothetical future to support or oppose the"Abolition of the Status of English as the Main Subject",concerning four major themes:language and culture, education and resources, nation and develop-ment,and scientific technology and information. The study reveals the discursive conflicts and media repre-sentation in the implementation of foreign language education policy. It is also hoped that this study will pro-mote positive interactions among the discourses of policy, academia, and media, and thus provide some ref-erences for further study on foreign language education policy.
