Impact of UPPP surgery on the arousal threshold in patients with OSA
Objective To assess the impact of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty(UPPP)surgery on the arousal threshold in patients with obstructive sleep apnea(OSA).Methods Data from patients who underwent tonsillectomy and UPPP surgery for OSA at our hospital's department of Otolaryngology between February 2017 and June 2018 were collected. The differences in preoperative and postoperative sleep data as well as arousal threshold were analyzed and compared. Results UPPP significantly improved the apnea-hypopnea index(AHI)and minimum nocturnal oxygen saturation in patients with severe OSA.Patients with severe OSA had higher arousal thresholds compared to those with mild-to-moderate OSA.Following UPPP surgery, the arousal thresholds decreased in patients with severe OSA.Conclusion The severity of OSA is positively correlated with an elevated arousal threshold.UPPP surgery can reduce arousal thresholds in patients with severe OSA.
