The influence of lianhuaqingwen granules on the function of nasal mucosa in chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps
Objective Chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps(CRSsNP)is a complicated disease.Lianhuaqingwen granules have a role in the treatment of CRSsNP.However, the mechanisms need to be clearly elucidated. The study aimed to explore the influence of lianhuaqingwen on the function of nasal mucosa in CRSsNP.Methods Seventy-two CRSsNP patients were enrolled and received lianhuaqingwen granules treatment for four weeks.Nasal mucociliary clearance(NMC)and nitric oxide(NO)were examined before and after the treatment.Nasal biopsy samples were obtained and stained using hematoxylin-eosin.Then,concentrations of cyclic adenosine monophosphate(cAMP),inositol trisphosphate(IP3),interleukin(IL)-8 and IL-13 were evaluated with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results Seventy CRSsNP patients completed the study.NMC was reduced significantly after lianhuaqingwen granules therapy, notwithstanding, the content of nasal NO was increased.Histological analysis indicated that nasal epithelial cell cilia were arranged regularly after the treatment.Furthermore, concentrations of cAMP and IP3 were elevated, and levels of IL-8 and IL-13 were decreased in the nasal samples after lianhuaqingwen granules administration. Conclusion Lianhuaqingwen granules may restore the functions of nasal mucosa in CRSsNP patients.
