Clinical observation on the efficacy of saffron extract nasal spray in the treatment of moderate to severe persistent allergic rhinitis
Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of saffron extract nasal spray (SENS) in the treatment of moderate to severe persistent allergic rhinitis (AR). Method Ninety patients with moderate to severe persistent AR were randomly divided into treating group (TG) and control group (CG),with 45 cases in each. The cases in CG were given the therapy composed of the first-line drugs recommended by AR guidelines,i.e. fluticasone propionate nasal spray (FPNS) plus loratadine and montelukast tablets orally taken, while those in TG were given SENS combined with the therapy as used among the cases in CG,with a therapeutic course lasted for 4 weeks for both groups. Then, collected and analyzed were such data as naso-conjunctivitis related Quality of Life questionnaire (RQLQ),the scores of nasal symptom total score (TNSS),and nasal endoscopy score, done at these time points of before treatment,by the end of the 2nd week and the 4th week following the treating respectively. At last, followed was the total effective rates evaluation in a comparative way between the two groups. Result By the end of the 2nd week and the 4th week following the treating,RQLQ scores and nasal endoscopy scores were all significantly improved in both groups, when compared with that seen before treatment, but the improvement was obviously higher in TG than in CG(P<0.05). Also,by the end of the 2nd week and the 4th week following the treating,TNSS scores of the two groups were significantly improved as well, when compared with that before treatment, but the improvement with statistical significance was only seen at the time point by the end of the 4th week following the treating, with that markedly higher in TG than in CG (P<0.05). As a result of comparative analysis between the two groups, the total effective rate of TG was 95.0%,significantly higher than the rate of 84.2% in CG (P<0.05). Conclusion The therapy combined saffron extract nasal spray with the first-line treatment strategy,as recommended by AR guidelines, can improve AR related symptoms and signs to elevate the quality of life for cases with AR much significantly.
