The outcomes of arytenoid cartilage and posterior vocal cord resection with CO2 laser for bilateral vocal cord paralysis
Objective To study the long-term outcomes of arytenoid cartilage and posterior vocal cord resection with CO2 laser for bilateral vocal cord paralysis. Methods A retrospective analysis on 38 patients with bilateral vocal cord paralysis was conducted. They received unilateral resection of arytenoid cartilage and posterior vocal cord from October 2008 to September 2021 in Xijing hospital. The clinical features and surgical outcomes were collected. Results The etiologies included thyroidectomy (27,71.0%),upper respiratory tract infection (3,7.9%),esophageal cancer surgery (1,2.6%),trauma (1,2.6%),congenital (1,2.6%) and unidentified (5,13.2%). Promising outcomes were achieved in 36 patients. Relapse occurred in 2 patients and they healed well after revision surgery. Conclusion A promising outcome of bilateral vocal cord paralysis could be obtained from arytenoid cartilage and posterior vocal cord resection with CO2 laser.
