Based on the micro data of the fifth, sixth and seventh national population census, this paper empirically analyzes the current characteristics, changing trends and related issuesof family structure in China. The study found that the proportion of core families decreased from 66%in 2000 to 55%in 2020,and the core family showed a trend of significantly increasing couple core families, significant decline in standard core families and slight increase in the defective core families.Different from the continuous and substantial expansion of single households, the expanded families, especially the third-generation families, increase firstly and then decline from 2000 to 2020.Demographic transition has profoundly changed the individual life course and family life cycle, thus leading to significant changes in family structure which highlighted the decentralization,non-traditionalization and diversification characteristics.Family structure changes further weaken the function of family childbearing, parenting education and supporting the elderly, which is not conducive to maintaining moderate fertility level and maintaining moderate population size.It is suggested to adhere to the family-centered social policy orientation, strengthen the support of family construction, and promote the high-quality family development, thereby assisting Chinese modernization with a huge population supported by the high-quality population development.
