The Essence of Treating Emergency and Critical Illnesses in Traditional Chinese Medicine
Emergency and critical care medicine in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)is a new discipline. There was no monograph on the treatment of critical illnesses in ancient times,so there was a lack of detailed dis-cussion on the treatment concept of critical illnesses in TCM.This article summarizes the five concepts of TCM in the treatment of critical illnesses, combining the discussion of ancient medical works and current clinical practice:1)the"holistic view"of saving lives and preserving people;2)the"etiology theory"of eliminating the causes;3)the"vital qi and pathogen theory"of distinguishing deficiency and excess;4)the"dynamic view"of constant obser-vation;5)the"preventive theory"of preventing diseases from developing. The"holistic view"of saving lives and preserving people is strategic, which should be throughout in the treatment of critical illnesses;the"etiology theo-ry"of eliminating causes and the"vital qi and pathogen theory"of distinguishing deficiency and excess are tacti-cal,which involve the development of specific treatment plans;the"dynamic view"of constant observation, which is to initially determine the treatment plan, continuously vet changes of critical illnesses, assess the therapeutic ef-fect at any time, and feedback and modify the plan;and the"preventive theory"of preventing diseases from devel-oping is an ideal state that we should achieve through the persistence of the above four concepts.
