An Examination and Analysis of the Diagnosis and Treatment of Cholera in Traditional Chinese Medicine
Cholera is named based on its clinical characteristics.Throughout history, traditional Chinese medi-cine(TCM)practitioners,driven by the diagnostic principles of"observing externals to infer internals"and"scruti-nizing symptoms to seek causes",have categorized diseases exhibiting the hallmark features of"swift and chaotic onset"under the broad term"cholera".This paper reviews historical TCM literature to reveal distinctions between true cholera and similar conditions, identifying etiological and pathogenetic variations such as cold versus heat,dry-ness versus dampness, and yin depletion versus yang damage.Therapeutic approaches range from warming the cen-ter,dispelling cold, and drying dampness,to clearing heat, resolving dampness, and alleviating summer heat,along-side strategies to restore yang, solidify the essence, and resolve qi stagnation.Notable innovations include the use of blood stasis resolution to aid yang restoration and detoxification combined with blood regulation to dispel foul-ness.These insights hold significant relevance for diagnosing and treating contemporary conditions such as acute gastroenteritis, functional gastrointestinal disorders, intestinal obstruction, diabetic ketoacidosis, heart and kidney failure, and stress-induced vomiting and diarrhea in modern clinical practice, urging medical professionals not to overlook them.
