Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Combined Use of Chinese Herbal Hot Compress and RICE Method for Acute Ankle Sprain
Objective:To observe the effectiveness of the combined use of Chinese herbal hot compress and RICE method for acute ankle sprain(AAS).Methods:92 patients with AAS were randomly divided into an obser-vation group and a control group, each consisting of 46 patients, using a random number table method. The control group was treated with the RICE method, while the observation group received the RICE method combined with Chinese herbal hot compress.Clinical efficacy was assessed in both groups 2 weeks after treatment, and the TCM syndrome scores were compared.Pain and swelling at admission, after 1 week of treatment, and after 2 weeks of treatment,as well as ankle joint function at admission, after 1 week of treatment, and after 1 month of treatment, were evaluated.Adverse reactions during treatment were also recorded. Results:The total effective rate of treat-ment in the observation group was 91.30%,which was higher than the 76.09%in the control group(P<0.05).Af-ter treatment, the main symptoms, secondary symptoms, and total scores of TCM syndromes decreased in both groups(P<0.05),and the scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group(P<0.05).Compared with before treatment, the VAS scores and ankle circumference of both groups decreased after 1 week and 2 weeks of treatment(P<0.05).Compared with 1 week of treatment, the VAS scores and ankle circumference of both groups decreased after 2 weeks of treatment(P<0.05).Compared with the control group, the VAS scores and ankle circumference of the observation group decreased after 1 week and 2 weeks of treatment(P<0.05).Compared with before treatment, the Kofoed scores of both groups increased after 1 week and 1 month of treatment(P<0.05).Compared with 1 week of treatment, the Kofoed scores of both groups increased after 1 month of treat-ment(P<0.05).Compared with the control group, the Kofoed scores of the observation group increased after 1 week and 1 month of treatment(P<0.05).No significant adverse reactions were observed in either group during treatment. Conclusion:The combined use of Chinese herbal hot compress and RICE method can improve clinical symptoms in patients with AAS,enhance clinical efficacy, and facilitate ankle joint functional recovery, making it safe and effective.
