Meta-analysis of the Therapeutic Effectiveness of Tonifying Qi and Activating Blood Formulas in Treating Optic Nerve Damage in Glaucoma
OBJECTIVE To systematically evaluate the effectiveness of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)tonifying Qi and activating blood in combination with conventional Western Medicine(WM)for treating optic nerve damage in glaucoma.METHODS We searched PubMed,Embase,Web of Science,The Cochrane Library,CNKI,Wanfang, and VIP databases for relevant literature on the combination of tonifying Qi and activating blood TCM with conventional WM for treating optic nerve damage in glaucoma,up to December 1st,2022.After quality assessment,we conducted a meta-analysis using Review Manager 5.4 and Stata 14 software on five outcome measures:Uncorrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure(IOP),mean sensitivity(MS)of the visual field, mean defect(MD)of the visual field, and the latency period of pattern visual evoked potential P100(LP100).RESULTS A total of nine studies involving 746 patients were included, with 395 in the experimental group and 351 in the control group.Compared to the treatment with WM alone, the combined therapy with tonifying Qi and activating blood formulas showed significant improvement in IOP[MD=-1.750,95%CI(-2.900,-0.610),Z=3.000,P=0.003],MD[MD=-1.560,95%CI(-1.880,-1.230),Z=9.360,P=0.000],and MS[MD=3.060,95%CI(2.540,3.580),Z=11.580,P=0.000].However,there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in improving uncorrected visual acuity and LP100(P>0.05).CONCLUSIONS Combined treatment with tonifying Qi and activating blood formulas and WM for optic nerve damage in glaucoma appears to be more effective in improving symptoms and signs in these patients.
