Research Progress on the Mechanisms of Safranal in Treating Dry Age-related Macu-lar Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration(AMD)is a prevalent and irreversible disease, serving as a leading cause of visual impairment and severe vision loss in individuals aged 65 and above.Dry AMD(dAMD),characterized by geographic atrophy, currently lacks effective treatment methods.Safranal,a major component of saffron, exhibits antioxidative,anti-inflammatory,and neuroprotective properties. This paper reviews the etiology and pathogenesis of dAMD,and com-prehensively outlines the potential mechanisms through which safranal,at the experimental stage, regulates cell apoptosis, oxidative stress, autophagy, and immune and inflammatory responses to prevent and alleviate dAMD.This review aims to provide new insights and options for future re-search on dAMD treatment.
