Research Progress on Treatment of Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration in Tradi-tional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine
Age-related macular degeneration(AMD)is a common cause of blindness in the elderly population, and with the aging of the global population,AMD has become a global issue.According to different manifestations in the fundus,AMD can be divided into two types:Dry AMD(dAMD)and wet AMD(wAMD).Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy has shown signifi-cant efficacy as a first-line treatment for wAMD,while there is still no definitive treatment for dAMD.This article reviews the progress of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)and Western Medicine treatments for dAMD by reviewing domestic and foreign literature. It was found that Western Medicine treatments mainly include complement inhibitors, neuroprotective agents, gene therapy, stem cell therapy,anti-inflammatory medicines, and antioxidants.TCM treatment for this disease mainly starts from liver, spleen, and kidney, combining syndrome differentiation with treat-ment.However,current research samples are relatively small, and there is a lack of large-sample,multicenter randomized controlled trials to provide strong evidence support for the treatment of this disease.
