Research Progress in the Treatment of Sj?gren's Syndrome-associated Dry Eye from the Perspectives of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine
Dry eye syndrome associated with Sjögren's syndrome(SS-DED)refers to dry eye syndrome that occurs as a result of involvement of the lacrimal glands in Sjögren's syndrome,lead-ing to increased tear film osmolarity and ocular surface inflammation.Non-infectious inflammation is an important factor influencing the occurrence and development of SS-DED,and anti-inflammatory treatment is a key therapeutic approach for this condition. This article summarizes the research progress in SS-DED from both Western Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)perspectives, including the pathogenesis, pathological changes, treatment approaches in Western Medicine, and etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment in TCM.It is found that the main treatment modalities in Western Medicine include artificial tears,anti-inflammatory drugs, and physical therapy.TCM,on the other hand, utilizes treatment methods such as individualized diag-nosis and treatment based on syndrome differentiation, acupuncture, and herbal medicine to effec-tively suppress ocular surface inflammation in SS-DED and restore ocular immune homeostasis, demonstrating certain clinical advantages. This study provides valuable insights for the diagnosis and treatment of SS-DED and future research directions.
