Research Progress of Traditional Chinese Medicine Regulating Inflammation-related Signaling Pathways in Dry Eye
With the in-depth study of the pathogenesis and treatment of dry eye, ocular sur-face inflammation has become one of the recognized pathological mechanisms of dry eye.Certain Chinese medicines and formulae can exert anti-inflammatory effects in dry eyes. This article sum-marizes the recent research progress on the anti-inflammatory effects and mechanisms of Chinese medicine in dry eye syndrome. It is found that certain Chinese medicine extracts such as total fla-vonoids from chrysanthemum, paeoniflorin, and some formulae can inhibit downstream inflamma-tory cells or inflammatory factors by regulating signaling pathways such as nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB),mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK),signal transducer and activator of transcription 3(STAT3),phosphoinositide 3-kinase(PI3K)/protein kinase B(Akt)/mammalian target of rapamycin(mTOR),thereby reducing the levels of inflammatory factors in tears or ocular tissues and inhibit-ing inflammation in dry eyes. This study may provide reference for future research on the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of Chinese medicine in the treatment of dry eye syndrome.
