Research Progress of Metabolomics in Age-related Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration(AMD)is a common cause of visual impairment and even blindness in elderly patients. With the aging population and increased life expectancy,AMD has become an increasingly important public health issue. However, the pathogenesis of AMD is not fully understood.Metabolomics,as a scientific discipline that studies the changes in metabolites and reveals the essence of life activities, can be used to analyze the unique metabolic products and overall metabolic status of AMD patients, thus serving as potential biomarkers for screening and evaluating AMD progression. This paper, through reviewing relevant domestic and international literature, provides a comprehensive review of metabolomics studies related to AMD,focusing on fluid studies such as plasma, serum, aqueous humor, vitreous humor, and urine. The majority of differential metabolites identified are lipids, amino acids, and nucleotides, primarily in-volving metabolic pathways such as amino acid metabolism, sugar metabolism, and carnitine me-tabolism.The application of metabolomics in AMD is rapidly advancing and holds promise for pro-viding personalized prevention strategies and targeted therapeutic approaches for AMD progres-sion.
