Short-term Efficacy of Walnut Moxibustion in Preventing and Controlling Mild to Moderate Myopia in Adolescents
OBJECTIVE To observe the clinical efficacy of walnut moxibustion therapy in preventing and controlling mild to moderate myopia in adolescents.METHODS A total of 84 patients(168 eyes)with mild to moderate myopia, treated at Guang'anmen Hospital,China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences and Beijing Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University from April 2020 to April 2021,were included in this study. They were randomly divided into a treatment group and a control group, with 42 cases(84 eyes)in each group. The control group received health education on eye use and eyeglass treatment, while the treatment group received walnut moxibustion therapy in addition to the control group's regimen. Both groups were treated for three months.Naked eye visual acuity, refractive power before and after ciliary muscle paralysis, axial length, and corneal curvature were measured before and after treatment.RESULTS There was no significant statistical difference in uncorrected visual acuity, refractive power before and after ciliary muscle paralysis, axial length, and corneal curvature between the two groups before treatment(P>0.05).(1)Uncorrected visual acuity:There was no significant difference in uncorrected visual acuity before and after treatment within each group or between the two groups after treatment(P>0.05).(2)Refractive power:The diopter of the control group before and after treatment was higher than that before treatment, and the differences were statistically significant(tbefore=2.638,P=0.009;tafter=2.800,P=0.006).There was no significant difference in the diopter of the observation group before and after paralysis treatment(P>0.05).After treatment, the diopter of the observation group before paralysis was lower than that of the control group, the difference was statistically significant(t=2.619,P=0.010).There was no significant difference in diopter between two groups after paralysis(P>0.05).(3)Axial length and corneal curvature:There were no significant differences in axial length and corneal curvature before and after treatment within each group or between the two groups after treatment(P>0.05).CONCLUSIONS Walnut moxibustion therapy can relieve or even eliminate the accommodative tension in adolescents with mild to moderate myopia, and can stabilize uncorrected visual acuity to a certain extent.
