Analysis of Medicinal Use for External Eye Diseases in Taiping Huimin Heji Jufang
Taiping Huimin Heji Jufang is the first government-issued pharmacopeia of proprietary medicines in Chinese history and a significant classic compendium categorizing 788 prescriptions by disease and syndrome,profoundly influencing subsequent clinical medication practices.This paper investigates the ophthalmological methods,syndromes of external eye diseases,characteristics of prescriptions,dosage forms,and administration methods used in the ophthalmology section of Taiping Huimin Heji Jufang.It was found that the diagnostic method for eye diseases in this text differentiates between external and internal eye diseases.Among the 24 prescriptions(18 for internal and six for external)used for external eye diseases,16 prescriptions are in powder form,seven prescriptions are in pill form,and two prescriptions are in ointment form.This paper summarizes the syndromes treated by these 24 prescriptions,including pterygium,acute red eye,corneal opacity,hordeolum,blepharitis,and photophobia with lacrimation,as well as the characteristics of medicinal use.This study provides a reference for the clinical treatment of external eye diseases in Ophthalmology of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
