FENG Jun's Experience in Treating Retinal Angiomatous Proliferation with the Collateral-pruning and Blood-stasis-resolving Method
Retinal angiomatous proliferation(RAP)is a special type of wet age-related macular degeneration, characterized by the formation of new blood vessels.Clinically, symptomatic treatment is often adopted, but the prognosis is generally poor.FENG Jun delved into the related discussions of ancient medical practitioners, combined with years of clinical application experience, and based on the theory of"collateral disease"in Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM),explained the intrinsic connection between collateral disease and RAP.He proposed that RAP belongs to the category of collateral disease in TCM,considering"stasis obstructing the collaterals and internal retention of dampness"as its main pathogenesis. In treatment,he employed the collateral-pruning and blood-stasis-resolving method, using insect-based and blood-activating stasis-resolving medicines to prune the collaterals, activate blood circulation, and resolve stasis.Concurrently,he facilitated water drainage and dampness elimination, while adjusting and supplementing the body's Qi and blood to unblock the collaterals in the fundus of the eye. This approach aims to nourish the eye system, consolidate the root, and improve vision. In his clinical practice, this method has shown significant efficacy, providing new methods and ideas for the clinical treatment of RAP.
