Treating Hordeolum Based on the"Six Depressions"Theory and the Idea of"Preven-tive Treatment of Disease"from the Perspective of Spleen and Stomach
Hordeolum,as a common and recurrent ophthalmic disease,is closely related to the"six depressions"theory in Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM),which includes Qi depression, blood depression, phlegm depression, fire depression, dampness depression, and food stagnation, all of which interact with each other.Liver Qi stagnation, emotional distress, and improper diet can lead to dysfunction of spleen and stomach, internal generation of dampness and phlegm, prolonged stagnation transforming into fire, ascending to the eyes, disruption of nutrient-defensive Qi circulation, blood stasis, and heat-toxin accumulation in the eyelids, skin, and meridians, eventually forming a sty.Given that spleen and stomach govern the eyelids, the treatment of this disease is often approached from the perspective of the spleen and stomach.Based on the"six depressions"theory and the idea of"preventive treatment of disease",this paper discusses strategies for treating sty from the perspective of spleen and stomach. In clinical practice, the condition is often complex, with various depressions interacting and transforming into each other. Therefore, treatment requires syndrome differentiation and individualized treatment, taking into account the symptoms of all depressions to achieve the goals of addressing both the root and branch, preventing recurrence, and improving efficacy. This not only opens up a new perspective for the diagnosis and treatment of sty in TCM but also demonstrates the advantages of TCM concept of"preventive treatment of disease"and holistic treatment, providing a valuable reference for clinical practice.
