An Exploration of the Origin and Evolution of Myopia
The prevalence of myopia has been steadily increasing, and its pathogenesis remains incompletely understood, with a lack of truly safe and reliable treatment methods.Myopia has been documented in Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)literature for a long time, but its disease names lack standardized uniformity, adding to the complexity of research. This study utilized The Comprehensive Dictionary of Chinese Medicine and various editions of textbooks on Ophthalmology of Traditional Chinese Medicine, combined with modern clinical diagnostic criteria for myopia,to establish search keywords.Employing a bibliographic research method and using the Books Same as Text ancient literature database and the Chinese Medical Classics as the literature retrieval platform,we collected and organized relevant records of myopia from ancient TCM literature.Through the textual analysis of representative disease names for myopia,we discovered that the term"myopia"first appeared in the Qing Dynasty's Mu Jing Da Cheng.Since its inception during the Qin and Han Dynasties, successive medical scholars have had varying names and understandings of this condition, but all descriptions revolve around the symptom characteristics of clear near vision and blurred distant vision. This paper,by delineating the historical evolution of myopia disease names, aims to standardize TCM disease terminology and promote the development of TCM theories and clinical research related to myopia.
