Investigation and correlation analysis of depression, anxiety, and sleep quality of naval officers and soldiers stationed on certain islands and reefs
Objective To investigate the anxiety, depression, and sleep quality of naval officers and soldiers stationed on certain certain islands and reefs, and to explore the correlation between their anxiety, depression, and sleep quality. Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted on 150 naval officers and soldiers stationed on certain islands and reefs in February 2019.There were 146 valid questionnaires, with a response rate of 97.3%.The generalized anxiety disorder 7-item(GAD-7)scale,patient health questionnaire 9(PHQ-9),and Pittsburgh sleep quality index(PSQI)were employed to investigate the anxiety, depression, and sleep quality of those officers and soldiers.According to the sleep quality, the officers and soldiers were divided into three groups:good sleep quality group(n=42),moderate sleep quality group(n=73),and poor sleep quality group(n=41).Non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test was used for inter-group comparison of GAD-7 and PHQ-9 scores;and the correlation between anxiety, depression, and sleep quality was analyzed using Spearman correlation analysis.Multiple linear regression analysis was performed with the scores of each PSQI factor as the independent variables and the standard scores of anxiety and depression as the dependent variables. Results Among the officers and soldiers,37.7%experienced anxiety,56.8%experienced depression, and 28.1%had poor sleep quality. The differences in depression and anxiety scores between the moderate sleep quality group and the poor sleep quality group were statistically significant(P<0.05).The total score of PSQI and the scores of most of its factors were significantly correlated with anxiety and depression scores(P<0.05 or P<0.01).Subjective sleep quality, sleep disorders, and hypnotic drugs impacted GAD-7 scores(β=1.886,1.862,and 5.370,all P<0.01),while subjective sleep quality and hypnotic drugs impacted PHQ-9 scores(β=1.797 and 7.259,both P<0.01).Conclusion The anxiety and depression of the naval officers and soldiers stationed on islands and reefs are significantly correlated with sleep quality. Therefore, improving sleep quality is an effective way to alleviate the anxiety and depression of the naval officers and soldiers stationed on islands and reefs.
