Kidney calculi are one of the most common diseases in urology.Vitamin D supplementation can promote intestinal absorption of calcium, and increase the risk of urinary calcium excretion and kidney calculi formation. However, some studies have shown that vitamin D supplementation in the general population was not associated with the risk of kidney calculi. Therefore, whether taking vitamin D may lead to kidney calculi is still a focus issue. This article mainly reviewed the overview of vitamin D and the basic, clinical and mechanistic studies on the relationship between vitamin D and risk of kidney calculi, and proposed that, when vitamin D and calcium supplements were taken in combination, the potential risk of kidney calculi formation should be considered.
