An Exploration of Indigenous Resources and Gender Differences:Reading The Gender of Historiography by Li Xiaojiang
This collection of book reviews is based on two main points:first, the gender of men and women is based on their biological sex,and second, gender systems can be different according to their geographical environments.Through dialogues with the authors of the books reviewed,Li Xiaojiang first defines the gender order of"differentiation between men and women"in the Chinese context, and the social division of labor between men working outside and women working at home, such as men working in the farm and women weaving indoors. Then, the author analyzes in detail why the traditional gender system of"three obediences"for women was protected by patriarchy, and why their vulnerable identities made them easier to survive than men in a pre-modern Chinese society. At the same time, the author analyzes how male-centered historical books have fabricated stories of"femme fatale".She also praises the women's encyclopedia compiled by the marginalized literati in Ming-Qing China recording the material civilization created by women.
