Intergenerational Transmission Mechanism of Love and Marriage Concepts:Meaning Emergence and Parent-Child Negotiation on Family,Love and Marriage Narratives
In the transitional period,the ideology of love and marriage reflects the complex logic of generational change in the Chinese society.How the family plays a role,as a mirror to the change,needs to be investigated seriously.In this article,family narratives about love and marriage are used as a lens for observing the ideology of love and marriage between two generations.Based on an in-depth interview proceeded by 57 college students on their parents'family marriage history,the article showcases the parents'reflection on their own marriage,their expectations and instructions about their children's marriage,as well as children's empathy and negotiation in terms of the experience passed on from their parents.It is pointed out that parents use three narrative frames,that is"generation continuation","generation rupture"and"life process"to elaborate their marriage wisdom,which to some extent continues the traditional idea of"co-construction of marriage and love".The"emotional resonance"produced by children in the narrative process is an important medium for them to understand their parents'understanding of marriage and love.Two generations share consensus on the rationality and practicability of marriage,but the younger generation resists the symbiosis of marriage and reproduction.In that sense,the transmission of ideology about marriage and love across generations manifest the negotiation on social contract between two generations.
