Distribution and Application of"Code Also"Indicator Words in Various Chapters in ICD-9-CM-3
This study aims to analyze the concept,number,and distribution characteristics of the"code also"indicators in ICD-9-CM-3.Through literature search and querying the medical record information management system and medical record quality control system,this study sorted out the"code also"indicators that should be focused on in each chapter based on previous research and historical data.For those"code also"that were mentioned in other studies,the literature sources were listed in the table.Those"code also"that were not covered in other studies were highlighted and discussed.For example,the use of adhesion shielding substances after surgery should be application or administration of adhesion barrier substance(99.77),mastoidectomy should be coded tympanoplasty(19.4-19.55)and skin graft(18.79),and sialoadenectomy should be coded any neck dissection(40.40-40.42).Cardioverter defibrillator implantation should be separately coded for the insertion of a rechargeable full-system contractility adjustment device(17.51),coronary artery bypass grafting(36.00-36.19),cardiopulmonary bypass[extracorporeal circulation][heart-lung machine](39.61).The limb lengthening procedure should be additionally coded for external fixation device(78.10-78.19)and any type of fixation device(84.71-84.73).Coders should pay attention to the role of the"code also"indicator in their work,so as to continuously improve the quality of coding.
