Analysis of Causes of Death Among Inpatients Who Died in the Surgical Department of a Tertiary Hospital from 2014 to 2021
Objectives This study aims to understand the composition, distribution characteristics, and changing trends of the causes of death by analyzing the death cases of surgical inpatients,so as to provide clues to hospital management. Methods Retrospective analysis was conducted to extract data on all 903 death cases in the surgical system from the medical record information system of a tertiary hospital in Beijing from January 1,2014 to December 31,2021.The coding of causes of death was unified according to the International Classification of Diseases(ICD10),and EXCEL2010 and SPSS 22.0 statistical analysis software were used for analysis. Results Among all surgical system deaths in 8 years, the male-to-female death ratio was 1.82:1.There was no statistically significant difference in the gender composition of death cases in different years(x2=13.997,P>0.05).The age group over 60 years old accounted for the highest proportion of deaths,at 66.8%.The age composition difference between each year was statistically significant(x2=59.254,P<0.05).The top five causes of death were circulatory system diseases(42.7%),digestive system diseases(12.3%),tumors(11.6%),injuries and poisoning(9.4%),and respiratory system diseases(6.8%).Conclusions The top three departments with the highest number of deaths are neurosurgery, vascular surgery, and general surgery. The top causes of death are cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral infarction, and acute pancreatitis.Early screening, early diagnosis, and early treatment of the elderly should be strengthened, and attention should be paid to the prevention of chronic diseases.Hospitals should strengthen males'health education and health screening to improve health.
