Application of Six Sigma Management in Improving Respiratory Nursing Records
Objectives This study aims to use the Six Sigma management method to improve the electronic nursing record sheet of the respiratory department of a hospital and the writing quality of the nursing record sheet.Methods The respiratory department of a tertiary hospital implemented the Six Sigma method to manage electronic nursing records on October 1,2021.150 patient care records from the respiratory department of a hospital from January 1,2021 to September 30,2021 were randomly selected as the pre-implementation group,and 150 patient care records from November 1,2021 to July 31,2022 were randomly selected as the post-implementation group.The writing quality and defect incidence rate of the nursing records between the two groups and the nursing staffs professional knowledge and nursing record writing ability before and after implementation were compared respectively by SPSS 21.0.Results The nurses'professional knowledge mastery(95.06±8.41)points and nursing record writing ability assessment scores(96.13±8.56)points in the post-implementation group were higher than those before the implementation(89.69±8.76)points,(88.07±8.69)points,and the differences were statistically significant.After the implementation of the Six Sigma Management Method,the number of nursing records with defects such as inconsistent medical records,inconsistent nursing records and conditions,ineffective evaluation of nursing measures,failure to reflect specialty characteristics,failure to use medical terminology,and incomplete nursing records was significantly less than before the implementation.The difference was statistically significant.The nursing record writing quality score of the pre-implementation group(92.12±3.98)points was higher than that of the post-implementation group(85.02±4.82)points,and the difference was statistically significant.Conclusions The Six Sigma management method can improve the writing quality of electronic nursing records in the respiratory department,reduce the incidence of nursing record defects,and improve the professional knowledge of the nursing staff.It is worthy of further promotion and application.
